Archers' Hill and Sayyid ash-Shuhada Square
The site of the Battle of Uhud: the hill where the fifty archers of the Prophet ﷺ held their post, and the Martyrs' Square, where Hamzah ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) and seventy of the Companions (Sahabah) were buried.

Story and history
This is the historic field of the famous Battle of Uhud (3 AH). Fifty archers took up position on the Archers' Hill (Jabal 'Aynayn) on the order of the Prophet ﷺ, to protect the rear of the Muslim army. He told them firmly not to leave their place, whatever the outcome. When the course of the battle changed, most of them came down, and the horsemen took advantage of the gap. A fierce battle followed in which seventy of the noble Companions were martyred. Foremost among them was the Lion of Allah, Hamzah ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, the Master of the Martyrs (Sayyid ash-Shuhada) and the uncle of the Prophet ﷺ. They were buried in the Martyrs' Cemetery next to the hill. The square also has the Sayyid ash-Shuhada Mosque, which is considered one of the largest mosques in Madinah.
Virtue of visiting
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said about Mount Uhud: “Uhud is a mountain that loves us and we love it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). He ﷺ also said, encouraging people to visit the martyrs: “Indeed, these martyrs: until the Day of Resurrection, no Muslim passes by them and greets them without their returning his greeting.” (Musnad Ahmad). Verses from Surah Al 'Imran were revealed about the events of the battle. Among them, Allah the Exalted says: “If a wound should touch you - there has already touched the [opposing] people a wound similar to it. And these days [of varying conditions] We alternate among the people” [Surah Al 'Imran 3:140 – translation of the meaning: Saheeh International]. It is Sunnah (a recommended practice) to visit the cemetery of the Martyrs of Uhud, to greet them with the greeting of peace (salam), to make supplication (du'a) for them, to ask Allah to forgive them, and to reflect on the lessons of the Battle of Uhud. This should be done while keeping to the Islamic etiquette of visiting graves, and avoiding seeking blessings (tabarruk) and other mistaken practices.
